What Causes Vaginismus?
There is not always one single cause. Vaginismus may be associated with:
* Pelvic floor muscle spasm or overactivity
* Vaginal infections, irritation or vulval skin conditions
* Vaginal dryness or hormonal changes
* Endometriosis or pelvic pain
* Scar tissue following childbirth or surgery
* Previous painful examinations or sexual experiences
* Anxiety or fear of pain
Pain can create a cycle: anticipating discomfort causes the muscles to tighten, which produces more pain and reinforces the protective response.
Our Approach: Finding and Treating the Cause
At Gerka Clinic, we do not simply treat the symptoms. We investigate why the pain and muscle tightening are happening and look for the physical, muscular, hormonal or emotional factors contributing to the condition.
The assessment begins with a private and unhurried consultation. Any physical examination is performed gently, with your consent and at your own pace.
Once we understand the possible causes, we create an individualised treatment plan, which may include:
* Pelvic health physiotherapy
* Pelvic floor relaxation and muscle retraining
* Manual therapy
* A personalised vaginal dilator programme
* Treatment of infections, dryness, hormonal changes, inflammation or scar tissue
* Breathing and nervous-system relaxation techniques
* Psychosexual support when appropriate
Advanced Treatments When Needed
In selected cases, we may use laser, radiofrequency or ultrasound-based technologies to support tissue health and complement pelvic floor rehabilitation.
For persistent or severe involuntary muscle spasm, (BTX) injections may be considered to help relax the affected pelvic floor muscles, reduce spasms and facilitate further rehabilitation.
These treatments are recommended only following a full clinical assessment and when appropriate for the individual patient. Technology and injections form part of a wider treatment plan focused on addressing the underlying cause, reducing pain and restoring normal muscle function.
How Gerka Clinic Can Help
Our approach is compassionate, private and tailored to each patient. You will never be rushed or pressured.
If penetration is painful or impossible, the solution is not to force your body to tolerate it. The first step is understanding why it is happening and finding the right treatment for you.
